500 TELUS International Philippines volunteers gift 12,500 students with Brigada Eskwela learning and hygiene kits

Manila, Philippines – 12,500 students in public schools were the happy recipients of 20,000 learning and hygiene kits to support their continued education through the efforts of TELUS International Philippines’ team member volunteers. Distribution to 17 schools across Metro Manila and Iloilo was completed this month in support of the Department of Education Brigada Eskwela Program’s “Bayanihan para sa Paaralan,” which rallies partner organizations like TELUS International Philippines to support the educational needs of the community.

“Wherever we are in the world, our TELUS Days of Giving events are high on every team’s priority list. Over the last seven years, we have supported DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela Program. Our community activities are events that our team members look forward to; they allow us to make a positive change in the communities where we live, work and serve, and they demonstrate the TELUS International brand of care that runs through the fabric of our company’s culture,” said Phoebe Carrera, TELUS International Philippines Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, explaining how the initiative in support of DepEd reinforces the company’s education pillar and social purpose.

From 2014 to date, TELUS Days of Giving initiatives in support of DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela program have touched the lives of about 49,875 student beneficiaries in 20 schools. Over 14,800 team member volunteers have collectively donated 69,800 hours to the success of the program.

This year, over 500 team members based at the company’s sites in Metro Manila and Iloilo volunteered over 1,000 hours to pack the learning and hygiene kits for public school students. In addition, beneficiary schools also received bond paper supplies to help with the printing of handouts and test papers necessary for teacher learning modules that are being used for students who are studying remotely.

Each learning kit comes packed with necessary school supplies such as notebooks, pad paper, pencils and ballpens, crayons, a ruler, a sharpener and glue, following a DepEd-recommended list of inclusions. Hygiene kits are packed with washable face masks, a face shield, soap, alcohol, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, and toothbrush.

To prepare the learning and hygiene kits for donation, team members volunteered for packing shifts of up to two hours each at a specially sanitized and prepared activity area within the office. Adhering to strict safety and hygiene protocols, volunteers were prepped at a sanitation area and provided with kits containing safety masks, gloves and wipes before proceeding to disinfected and physically-distanced workstations monitored by safety personnel.

“It’s great to be part of a company that not only gives back to our communities, but provides their
employees opportunities to actively help as well. This volunteering initiative was well prepared and the
assistance we will be able to provide to the public school students and teachers will go a long way
toward helping them flourish despite the pandemic,” said Arnon Almonina, TELUS International team
member volunteer.

Some of the 17 beneficiary schools were Maria Concepcion Cruz High School (Taguig), Maligaya High School (Quezon City), Cielito Zamora Memorial School (Caloocan), Bacood Elementary School (Manila), A. Bonifacio Integrated School (Iloilo), Bo. Obrero National High School (Iloilo), Hibao-an Elementary School (Iloilo), Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School (Iloilo), and La Paz Elementary School (Iloilo).

In a related initiative, Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School, Rosauro Almario Elementary School, Isabelo delos Reyes Elementary School, Tenement Elementary School, and Kamuning Elementary School were also the proud beneficiary of a portable media library from TELUS International Philippines, in partnership with Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc.
