The Association of Foundations (AF) in partnership with the Peace and Equity Foundation (PEF) organized the Learning Event on Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) held from October 13 to 15, 2015 at The Linden Suites, Ortigas Center, Makati City. Participants were primarily partner organizations of PEF in their social enterprise program and DRRM projects, as well as members of AF who expressed interest in DRRM.
The event was an opportunity for participants to develop a better understanding of disaster risk reduction and management, know the roles and responsibilities of the stakeholders/different sectors in mitigating disasters and responding to different calamities, and gain knowledge on the importance of having a comprehensive DRRM plan that is effective, sustainable and applicable.
To set the context of the event, the event started with a presentation by Fr. Pedro Walpole, SJ (Chairman of the Environmental Science for Social Change) of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ talks about the importance of environmental consciousness to care for our common home. A presentation by NDRRMC Director Romeo Fajardo followed focusing on on the mandate of the Council and how they complement what CSOs are doing at the grassrootslevel. This was followed by a series of sharing of experiences of participants on the following specific DRRM themes: disaster prevention and mitigation, disaster preparedness, disaster response, and disaster recovery and rehabilitation. On the final day, Albay Governor Joey Salceda shared with participants his province’s impressive track record in handling disasters stressing that the impact of calamities on life and property can be mitigated provided the stakeholders are committed to ensuring the safety not just of themselves but of everyone in the community. “It can be done,” he said.
