The British Council, in partnership with Peace and Equity Foundation, will hold the 2014 “I am a Changemaker” Social Enterprise Ideation Camp from 19-25 October in Tagbilaran, Bohol. This is the sixth run of the “I am a Changemaker” Competition that the Council has been spearheading annually since 2009. It is a competition that aims to build a cadre of young social entrepreneurs in the country. This year’s theme is “Resiliency, Reconstruction, and Recovery,” which hopes to address pressing challenges around disasters and conflict.
I Am a Changemaker is a programme dedicated to developing young people’s creativity while offering a space to exchange, foster thinking and collaboration about ground-breaking social innovation. Our work aims to stimulate young people’s networks – to inspire and encourage creativity and provide an outlet for ideas. We believe ideas cannot happen in isolation and collaboration via networks can bring together the right mix of people, skills and experience needed to turn ideas into reality. Some of the ideas developed through the programme have helped to solve a number of pressing social challenges.
The competition begins with a nationwide call for applications (essay and video) where aspiring young entrepreneurs pitch an idea for social innovation. Then, 40 young aspiring entrepreneurs will be selected to participate in the camp in October. The camp features both local and UK-based experts (University of Northampton), and features a variety of methodologies: workshops, case studies, learning teams, field exposure, and a pitching session. The top 5 teams get 100,000 pesos seed funding to kickstart their ideas. They also get coaching and mentoring support for a year.
