Smile Train Supports the 14th International Cleft Congress

Smile Train served as the primary sponsor for the 14th International Cleft Congress held last  July 11 to 15 in Edinburgh, Scotland—gathering hundreds of medical professionals from around the world to collaborate toward improving global cleft care. The Filipino delegates included plastic and reconstructive surgeons, orthodontists, speech-language pathologists, and nutrition experts like Dr. Mark Manansala, Dr. Reden Bukid-Abella, Dr. Edmund Mercado, Dr. Janet Pandan, Dr. Mianne Silvestre, and Veronica Yu.

Dr. Manasala and Dr. Mercado participated in a one-of-a-kind workshop on the use of the Simulare Medical Unilateral and Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Simulators, after which the participants of the workshop can use their learnings to conduct training sessions in their respective countries. Meanwhile, Dr. Silvestre, Smile Train partner and President of Kalusugan ng Mag Ina, presented her paper on Specialized Breastfeeding Counseling for Infants With Clefts Made Practical, while Veronica Yu discussed her research paper on speech interventions and the role of parents in providing therapy at home.

Through conferences and events like these, Smile Train advances accessible cleft care alongside fellow advocates and partners. We are also able to increase cleft literacy by updating knowledge and keeping up with trends to further develop cleft surgeries and post-cleft surgery care in the future.

Smile Train Recognized by San Juan

Last July 29, the city government of San Juan recognized Smile Train for its continuous support of healthcare workers during the pandemic. The award was given during the 25th founding anniversary of the San Juan Medical Center and was accepted by Smile Train Philippines’ program director, Jun Grimares.

Smile Train would like to thank the city government of San Juan for their recognition of ST’s hard work. Awards like this acknowledge the dedication of the people who make it possible and serve as markers of the organization’s commitment to quality and accessible healthcare.

Smile Train plans to strengthen partnerships with advocacy groups and other institutions to further improve cleft treatment, care, and literacy in the country. If you would like to help in furthering our advocacy, visit the Smile Train website or any of the Smile Train official accounts.
