Blaan parents in Sarangani receive livelihood support

One hundred two Blaan parents (102) from nine (9) communities in four (4) municipalities in Sarangani Province are given the opportunity to run their chosen micro-enterprises. The beneficiaries are parents of Blaan learners in Datalbila Integrated School, Blaan Integrated School and Lamlifew IP Integrated School in Malungon; PH Millona Central Integrated School in Malapatan; Lebe Integrated School and Cabansal M. Larry IP School in Maasim; and Datu Mamundas Mamalumpong Integrated School & Datu Abdullah Tondog Elementary School in Alabel.

Following the community driven development framework, the parents collectively decided on their livelihood activities after thorough consideration of the potential market, available resources, environment, infrastructure, among others. These activities, seen to augment the daily income of parents, include buy and sell of household and school essentials, farming, mini grocery store, hog raising, barbecue selling, and rice retailing. The parents also attended learning sessions on basic bookkeeping and accounting, items inventory, and financial management. The generated income is aimed to help provide for the daily school expenses of their children.

The livelihood support is a component of the Project Kaklung dad Nga implemented by Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc (CLAFI) in partnership with Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation. The project also extended learning sessions on strengthening families by encouraging good behavior, building a healthy family, and knowing the roles of the family members, how to effectively communicate and resolve conflict within the family, how to do positive discipline and communication. Another significant milestones the project aims is to teach Blaan reading at home, in the context of the Blaan culture.

Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation is a private, U.S.-based foundation that works for the prevention and treatment of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of children, women, and their families in the Philippines and in Hawai’i.
