CEAP successfully organizes an online forum discussing the proposed Mandatory ROTC Bills

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) held an online forum entitled, “From NSTP to Mandatory ROTC: What Should We Know About It?” a panel discussion dissecting the impact of Mandatory ROTC on June 30, 2023 (Friday) 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM via Zoom and Facebook Live.

Almost 700 people, including students, educators, and parents, attended the webinar and thoroughly listened to the adverse impact of the proposed Mandatory ROTC (SBN 2034 & HB 6687).
Senator Risa Hontiveros served as the main speaker and discussed the bill’s precarious provisions. And she was followed by an immense and informative sharing of reactors who shared their perspectives on the issue. The three reactors were Mr. Ken Paolo G. Gilo, the National Chairperson of the Student Council Alliance of the Philippines and Executive President of the University of St. La Salle – Bacolod Student Government,  Prof. Evelyn A. Songoco, Ph.D., the President of the UST Alumni Association, Inc., and  Br. Noelvic H. Deloria, SC, Chairperson of the CEAP National Advocacy Commission. Br. Deloria presented and discussed the CEAP letter of Appeal and position regarding the proposed Mandatory ROTC.CEAP President and COCOPEA Chairperson, Sr. Ma. Marissa R. Viri, RVM, opened the forum with her compelling welcoming message and was preceded by Mr. Jose Allan I. Arellano, CEAP Executive Director, with his opening remarks. Both clarified that CEAP is not against ROTC, but they are against making it mandatory. Dr. Edilberto C. de Jesus, former DepEd Secretary and currently a Senior Research Fellow of the Ateneo School of Government, presented his special message to the participants and urged the CEAP to continue finding ways forward to push for its advocacy.

The forum was a success and helped to raise awareness about the issue of Mandatory ROTC. The participants were able to learn more about the implications of the bill and share their perspectives on the issue. The forum also helped to strengthen the resolve of those who oppose Mandatory ROTC. As long as the bills have not been made into law, there is hope for us advocates of peace and promoters of the NSTP Program!
