Since mid-2018, the Association of Foundations (AF) has implemented the Leaders Empowered and Dedicated to Serve through the NGO Sector Program (LEAD to Serve) in response to leadership issues in the NGO sector. The Program aims to contribute to building “a pool of highly competent and committed Philippine NGO talents attracted to and retained by their organizations and interested to assume leadership functions.”
In November 2018, the pilot batch of the LEAD to Serve Course, composed of 10 NGO Executive Directors/Deputy Directors, began their LEAD to Serve journey, through a series of face-to-face sessions over a four-month period. The batch completed the Course in February 2019. Four years after graduating from the Course, AF conducted an Outcome Evaluation process with the members of the pilot batch to assess their progress in relation to 10 leadership competencies, drawn from the Philippine NGO Leadership Competencies Framework, in their different spheres of influence.
For most of the graduates, it took some time to adopt their proposed improvements and innovations in their organizations amid various challenges in their respective contexts. Nevertheless, the evaluation found that the LEAD to Serve Course has proven to be mostly successful in achieving its desired results. By drawing from the fundamentals of the LEAD to Serve Course, and with support from the LEAD to Serve Team, their batchmates, and other support groups, LEAD to Serve proved to be vital in cultivating empowered and dedicated NGO leaders as manifested by the growth journey of Batch 1.
