SBB kicks off in Mindanao

Three hundred seventy-three (373) teachers and youth volunteers from 62 schools in Mindanao gathered again in a series of 2-day Teacher and Youth Volunteers Training in preparation for the conduct of the Summer Big Brother (SBB). SBB is a 15-day reading remediation initiative of Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. (CLAFI), the Department of Education and partner Local Government Units for incoming Grade 4 learners who have reading difficulties.

In the training, the teachers and youth volunteers from DepEd Divisions of Davao, Iligan, Zamboanga, General Santos and Sarangani learned fun and engaging techniques of teaching reading to foster learners’ interests while developing the essential reading skills of phonological awareness, word recognition, vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension.

The training was made possible with the help of 18 Teacher-Trainers from DepEd Sarangani who selflessly offered their time and shared their knowledge and expertise to the participating volunteers. Following the training, the teacher and youth volunteers will commence the 15-day remedial reading as an activity integrated into, and in support of, the National Learning Camp of the Department of Education.

The Summer Big Brother is the longest running literacy program of CLAFI conducted annually through the support of the subsidiaries from the Alcantara Group of Companies namely: Sarangani Energy Corporation, Siguil Hydro Power Corporation, Alsons Development and Investment Corporation, San Ramon Power, Inc., Mapalad Power Corporation, and Western Mindanao Power Corporation.

Through the Summer Big Brother, CLAFI and DepEd hope to see the children learn to live, laugh and love through reading.
