SFI expands its Family Farm implementation to 280 households in Alabel, Sarangani

SEAOIL Foundation Inc. (SFI) conducted batches of Sustainable Agriculture Training in Alabel, Sarangani on May 9 – June 7, 2023

A total of 283 new households from 14 barangays were trained, prioritizing families with malnourished children, pregnant women with low BMI, and pregnant teenagers. Adding to the 181 households from last year, a total of 417 households are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to establish and sustain their Family Farms, with the aim of reducing hunger and malnutrition in the municipality.

Participating households were identified by Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) and Barangay Health Workers (BHW), validated by a nurse and approved by their barangay captains.

At the end of the training, the participants were able to: (1) express their understanding of SFI’s Tugon sa Gutom – Family Farm Program and explain its underlying principles of food security and Sustainable Agriculture, (2) demonstrate skills on planning and management of Family Farms, (3) explain the principles and strategies to pests and diseases management and prevention, and (4) demonstrate the basics of preparing organic fertilizer and pesticides and seeds production and storage for future use.

To ensure continued progress, on-site monitoring and technical assistance will be provided for a duration of six months following the training. This support aims to track the implementation of family farms and monitor improvements of scores in the Household Food Insecurity Scale (HFIAS).
