Volunteers lead in improving reading skills of Mindanao Children

Reading is more fun if introduced with games, songs, and creative activities more so if assisted by reading volunteers. This is the core of the Summer Big Brother (SBB), a 15-day, end-of-school-year reading intervention of the Conrado and Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc.. With the help of community reading volunteers, children who were identified as slow readers improved their reading skills while having fun.

720 volunteers (323 teachers, 363 youth, and 34 parents) from 63 schools in the Province of Sarangan and the Cities of General Santos, Davao, Iligan and Zamboanga were mobilized in this year’s SBB implementation. They helped the teachers demonstrate educational games, facilitate interactive activities, and conduct one-on-one reading sessions. Their presence also motivated the kids to learn and love reading.

Like in the past 15 years, the SBB 2023 resulted to another remarkable success. According to the results of the pre and post-test conducted, 98% of the 2,545 beneficiary children improved their reading level with 12 % of them achieving independent reader level. This means that the children demonstrated outstanding reading proficiency and can already read and comprehend stories without assistance.

The volunteer driven Summer Big Brother (SBB) Reading is Fun is an annual reading remediation program of the Alcantara Foundation. It is aimed to help DepEd lessen number of non and slow readers among learners and nurture spirit of volunteerism in the community, especially the youth.  Since 2014, the program already assisted 25,000 slow readers and engaged 8,282 community volunteers. The long running program is implemented in partnership with the Alcantara Group of Companies, the Department of Education and the host Local Government Units.
